Tomaszewski will lead efforts to shape Princeton’s campus for the future, ensuring that the University’s spaces continue to inspire and support its academic mission. He reports to University Provost Jennifer Rexford.
Matthew Tomaszewski joined the Office of the Provost in October 2024 and brings over 28 years of experience in higher education, specifically in strategic campus development, capital projects and sustainability initiatives. Prior to joining Princeton, he served as the associate vice president for campus planning and sustainability at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts.
“Matthew is a leader with tremendous depth and breadth of experience and I am delighted that he has joined the University as the new vice provost for space programming and planning. He will play a critical role in matching resources to the academic mission of the University by ensuring the effective use of our current spaces and supporting the development of new facilities and major renovations,” said Rexford.
Tomaszewski serves as the provost’s primary adviser and representative in the vision and allocation of campus spaces. He applies an academic perspective to campus planning projects, aiming to improve the University’s physical environments to better meet the current and future needs of faculty, students and staff. Additionally, he supports the overall campus planning process and serves as secretary to the University Facilities Planning Group, co-chaired by the provost and executive vice president.
“I’m thrilled to join the Princeton team. The faculty, staff and students I’ve met have been very welcoming and supportive as I start my new role,” said Tomaszewski. “This is a particularly active time on campus with a tremendous amount of planning, design and construction activities either beginning or in process. I look forward to contributing to the continued success of such a vibrant community.”
Before working at Smith College, Tomaszewski held various positions at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 2002 to 2021. Most recently, he served as the executive associate provost for capital planning, where he managed significant campus capital and master planning efforts and contributed to the University's long-term campus vision.
Tomaszewski holds an M.B.A. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, an M.Ed. from the University of Illinois-Chicago and a bachelor’s degree from Penn State University.
